Yummy recipies from Our Wok n Talk Birthday Party

Egg Drop Soup II

(I got from allrecipes.com)

2 (14.5 oz) cans chicken broth

1 TBSP cornstarch

1 egg, slightly beaten

frozen mixed veggies

2 TBSP chopped green onion

In a medium stockpot, mix cold chicken broth with cornstarch. Slowly heat over medium heat, stirring frequently. Add frozen mixed veggies (as much as you like) and heat. Once soup is almost to boiling point, stir soup once very gently to get the broth going in a circle. As the soup is moving in a circle, slowly pour egg into soup. DO NOT STIR for a minute until the egg has cooked. Remove soup from the heat, divide into four portions and garnish with green onion.

**I didn't use chicken stock, I used boullion and mixed enough to equal that much broth. Also, I didn't add the green onion.

Sweet and Sour Sauce

(I found it in a taste of home magazine years ago)

1 cup sugar

2 TBSP cornstarch

1 tsp seasoned salt

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup water

1 TBSP maraschino cherry juice

1 tsp worcestershire sauce

Combine the sugar, cornstarch, and seasoned salt in a saucepan; gradually add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Yummy!

Lemon Sauce

(Dotte Duncan Brockbank and Sally Thurman Ware)

1 cup sugar 1/2 cup butter (I use less)

3 TBSP cornstarch 2 TBSP Lemon Juice

2 cups water 1 tsp salt

Combine sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan. Mix in water, butter, lemon juice and salt. Stir and bring to a boil for 1 minutes. Serve over stir-fry and rice.

Money Saving Tips from our Weekday Activity

***Please make sure to use something to store these in that won’t be mistaken for food items by others!! Can make you sick!!***

　

Windex

2 TBSP non-sudsy ammonia

1 tsp dish soap (Joy or Dawn are best)

1 pint rubbing alcohol

Few drops of blue food coloring

Combine all into a gallon jug, then fill the rest with water. Pour into sprayer as you need it.

　

Homemade Laundry Detergent

½ cup Arm & Hammer powdered Laundry detergent

½ cup 20 Mule Team Borax

½ cup (or 1/3 bar grated) Fels Naptha Bar Soap

In a large saucepan heat 6 cups of water. Add grated bar soap, stir until melted. Add laundry detergent and borax. Stir until dissolved. Remove from heat. In a 2 gallon bucket, add 6-½ quarts of hot water; pour soap mixture into water and stir well. Soap will jell after it sits, but it is easy to stir or shake before use.

*Makes almost 2 gallons

*One batch=68 loads

*use ½ cup per load

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

1 cup 20 Mule Team Borax

1 cup baking soda

citric acid (Mix a little in to avoid cloudy or spotty dishes)

Mix together well. Use 2 TBSP per load. Fill rinse dispenser with white distilled vinegar.

We will also learn about "couponing" with Heather (Sister Julie's Daughter) and how to save money while shopping. In addition, we would like each sister to "show and tell" about an item that she has fixed or repurposed to extend the life of things in her home (such as a Levi quilt, patching something, sewing on buttons, replacing a zipper, simple household repair, ect.)

We will also be quilting on February 10th @ 2:00!

Gospel Principles: Chapter 2 Our Heavenly Family

We lived in heaven with Heavenly Father before we came to earth. We were His spirit children and had spirit bodies. We loved Him and He loved us. Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, page 354

Heavenly Father had a plan, the plan of salvation, for people to follow to become like Him. According to the plan, we would come to earth and have bodies of flesh and blood. We would be tested to see if we would obey God’s commandments.
Abr. 3:24–25
If we obeyed them, we would go back to Heavenly Father. But we would need help. We would have to have our sins taken away, and we would need resurrected bodies. Because we could not take away our own sins or resurrect our own bodies, we needed a Savior to do that for us.
2 Ne. 2:5–9

Heavenly Father chose Jesus Christ to be our Savior. Jesus loved Heavenly Father. Jesus also loved us, and He wanted to come to earth to show us how to be righteous and to save us. He would suffer to take away people’s sins. He would die and be resurrected. Then we would be resurrected, too.
2 Ne. 2:8–10; Moses 4:1–2

Satan also wanted to be chosen. But Satan did not love Heavenly Father. He did not love us. He wanted to change Heavenly Father’s plan so that he would have His power. Moses 4:1–4
Some of the spirits followed Satan. They did not obey God, which made Him very sad. He banished Satan and his followers from heaven. Satan is the devil. He and the spirits who followed him tempt us to sin. Moses 4:3–4

Heavenly Father told Jesus to make an earth for us. Jesus did. He put plants and animals on it. He made the sun, the moon, and the stars, too. At last we could come to earth and have bodies of flesh and blood! Heb. 1:2; Mosiah 3:8; Abr. 4

Let Virtue Garnish Your Thoughts

We need to stand tall and be firmly fixed in perpetuating Christlike virtues.

What do you think of when you think of Virtue?

Bishop Burton brought out these thoughts---

"Today I wish to speak about personal traits we call virtues. Virtuous traits form the foundation of a Christian life and are the outward manifestation of the inner man. The spelling in English of many individual virtues concludes with the letters ity: integrity, humility, charity, spirituality, accountability, civility, fidelity, and the list goes on and on. Relying on literary license, I refer to the virtues ending in ity as the “ity” virtues. “Ity” is a suffix that means quality, state, or degree of being."

President James E. Faust suggested that integrity is the mother of many virtues. He noted that integrity can be defined “as a firm adherence to a code of moral values.” He also suggested that “integrity is the light that shines from a disciplined conscience. It is the strength of duty within us”

It is difficult for a person to display virtuous traits if he or she lacks integrity. Without integrity, honesty is often forgotten. If integrity is absent, civility is impaired. If integrity is not important, spirituality is difficult to maintain.

I Loved today's lesson and your coments as well! I love this gospel and how we can be a help to each other. Satan has his helpers! I am glad that you are mine! I am going to work on the "ity" virtues!

Learning to be temperate in all things is a spiritual gift available through the Holy Ghost.

In response to the Prophet Joseph Smith’s inquiry, the Lord instructed: “And no one can assist in this work except he shall be humble and full of love, having faith, hope, and charity, being temperate in all things, whatsoever shall be entrusted to his care.” “I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things.”

Likewise, a temperate soul—one who is humble and full of love—is also a person of increased spiritual strength. With increased spiritual strength, we are able to develop self-mastery and to live with moderation. We learn to control, or temper, our anger, vanity, and pride. With increased spiritual strength, we can protect ourselves from the dangerous excesses and destructive addictions of today’s world.

Self-Reliance

Self-reliance is a simple concept that encourages each of us to take responsibility for our own needs—physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and economic.

"We become self-reliant," explains Julie Beck, president of the Church's organization for women, "through obtaining sufficient knowledge, education, and literacy; by managing money and resources wisely, being spiritually strong, preparing for emergencies and eventualities; and by having physical health and social and emotional well-being."

Church leader Elder Robert D. Hales outlines ways we can become self-reliant:

• Be ready for rainy-day emergencies
• Avoid excessive debt; be content with what we have
• Use the resources of the earth wisely; don´t be wasteful
• Prepare for the future by making spending and savings plans
• Keep a family or personal budget
• Teach children wise spending habits and help them save for the future
• Obtain an education or vocational training
• Find gainful employment

As we become self-reliant, we will be prepared to face challenges with confidence and peace of mind.

Suggestions for scripture marking:

SMALL

The Standard Works should be a personal handbook of instructions. Annotations (notes you write in the margins) serve to clarify, explain, and bring attention to passages of scripture. Cross-references serve to relate passages of scripture for verification of a principle or principles. In order to allow for future marking and additions, writing should be small.

NEAT

Others may look into your Standard Works. What kind of an example will those scriptures be? Marking neatly shows consideration for valuable property. It also helps you to organize and to find things better.

SIMPLE

There are many complicated systems of marking; some use many colors and many tools. Sometimes these complicated systems take more time than they are worth and require more tools than are easy to carry. Keep your system uncomplicated and useful.

The circling (or underlining) of a word or a short phrase may make your marking more practical, more useful, than just boxing in or shading an entire verse. Your marking should indicate more than just a passage has been marked: it should also tell why it has been marked. Highlighted key words can help in doing that.

Tidbits from Stake Conference
Today was our Stake Conference. We had the broadcast from SLC. It was really good. Here are just a few tidbits from conference.

Elder Paul K. Sybrowski of the Seventy conducted and was the first speaker.
He said, "Our Heavenly Father loves us enough to give us prophets. Do we love him enough to follow them?" He gave us a challenge. He asked each one of us to study the last General Conference talks before the next conference. He challenged us to get a copy of the conference talks for each member of the family to study.

Sister Margaret S. Lifferth of the General Primary talked about a Foundation of Faith. She talked about her pioneer heritage and how we should look to our heritage. They listened and followed the prophet. Are we listening to the Prophet. Sacrificing and Disciplining ourselves.

Elder Quentin L. Cook gave us three things to work on.
1- Creating Zion in our Hearts and Homes.
2-Be a Light.
3-Focus on Principles.
He also stressed that we must develop our own testimony. We can not live on borrowed light.

President Henry B. Eyring urged us to become cleansed.
He talked about always having the Spirit of Christ with us. He gave us council on how to become cleansed and have the spirit of the Lord with us always.
1-Start the day with Prayer. The simple act of prayer will bring the spirit. Give thanks, ask for blessings, pray for others, pray to have the power to resist.
2-Choose to go to safe places. Thoughts are a guide to safety.
3-Go to rescue others. As we persist they will realize our love for them.

Looking for an easy after-Thanksgiving recipe that's oh-so comforting and delicious?
6 T. butter
1/2 c. onion, chopped
1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. salt
1/4 t. white pepper

3 c. chicken broth
3 c. cooked turkey, cubed
10-oz. pkg. frozen peas and carrots, cooked and drained
2 c. potatoes, peeled, cooked and cubed
17.3-oz.pkg. frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed

Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Sauté onion until tender and golden. Blend in flour, salt and pepper; add broth and whisk well. Cook until thick and bubbly; add remaining ingredients except puff pastry. Divide evenly among 6 individual casserole dishes and set aside.



Cut puff pastry into 6 squares to fit the tops of dishes; cut a steam vent in the center of each with a mini cookie cutter.

Place pastry tops on casserole dishes; set dishes on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees until pastry is golden, about 10 to 15 minutes.

This is for all varieties of dry beans. The beans need to be hydrated before bottling so the beans are soft and they will cook completely through and kill all the botulism spores that are in beans.

After washing the beans, hydrate the beans by one of two ways:
1-Soak for 12-18 hours before bottling
2-A quicker method is to cover the beans with water and boil for 2 minutes. Then cover with a lid and let soak for 1 hour.

Heat the beans so they are packed hot. Fill bottles with beans and the water they soaked in. Leave 1" headspace. 1/2 tsp salt may be added. The bottle will look like it is about 2/3 beans.

Pressure Quarts 90 minutes at 13 lbs. of pressure
Pints 75 minutes at 13 lbs. of pressure

“He Was a Prophet of God”

Debra's lesson Sunday (October 18th) was an amazing lesson. She urged us to write on our hearts with an "IRON PEN" a testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

"JOB 19:24 That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!"

The Lesson was filled with testimonies of people who knew the Prophet in many different settings. Debra asked us to look at our lives and our testimonies. What can we do?
